COMPREHENSIVE HPLC-DAD BASED FINGERPRINTING ANALYSIS OF IRANIAN SAFFRON AND ITS GEOGRAPHICAL CLASSIFICATION

Abstract: The main concern behind Saffron, the dried stigmas of Crocus sativus L., is quality control . Crocins, Crocetin, Safranal and Picrocrocins are the main constitutes of Saffron in which they have resposilbity for color, odor and bitter taste respectively [1,2]. In this study a comprehensive Geographical dependent quality of saffron based on HPLC-DAD analysis was investigated. Also a similarity chromatographic fingerprinting was made. Our results show a wide metabolite distribution of 0.83±0.09 to 38.82±1.50 ,0.003±0.000 to 0.103±0.004 , 4.93±0.11 to 30.23±0.21 And 0.021±0.002 to 0.579±0.014 for Crocins, Crocetin, Picrocrcin and Safranal respectively. Also the statistical fingerprinting analysisdemonstratingCrocins are the main constitituteof Safforn which could be used for saffron geographical classification.
